What do I want in a winning chapter?

Filed under: FanLit — aliceaudrey @ 3:35 pm

This was a question asked on the Chapter 4  forum.  Why not answer it?

First and foremost I look for a good read.  Unluckily, I’ve become extraordinarily picky in the last few years.  For me a good read is one that draws me into a satisfying story in spite of my inclination to notice any and every possible flaw from narrative intrusion to poor word choice.  Anything that can get me past the reader’s barrier will work for darn near anyone.

Or so I thought.  Yet my top picks aren’t showing up on other people’s lists.  They do, however, tend to show up in the top 10.

A matter of taste?  Maybe.

  2. I’ve been doing that off and on for a couple of years. Now I’m having trouble finishing a Teresa Medeiros. It seemed so good at first, and still is, but I’m just not there for it.

  3. I’m looking for a chapter that’ll a) close up some of the gaps that have crept into the plot and b) deepen our understanding of the characters. I have a feeling that discontinuities have a habit of creeping into serial fiction projects like this. Maybe we’ll get a good winning chapter that addresses this.

  4. I fear it will only get worse and worse. But then, I don’t really have to worry about making the end product viable. It makes it hard to write the next chapter, but I can still manage.
