More Reading as a Writer

Filed under: Writing Craft — aliceaudrey @ 11:36 am

As I said before, reading with a writer’s eye on technique has it’s pitfalls.  I talked a little about how it’s done, but I didn’t give you much reason to try it.  And maybe I should.

Off the top of my head I can only think of one really good reason.  The fiction that readers love is the final authority on what is and what is not acceptable in fiction.

I originally went on and on about it, but decided this says it all.

  1. And I think that is pretty much the same with every artistic endeavour. Even if you detest it and think it’s garbage, if there is a market for it… I know some people will disagree.

  2. So often I see people say you can’t do this or you can’t do that and still be good. Well, maybe numbers don’t count, but I say if a best seller can head hop, then don’t assume something is wrong with a story only because it broke the rule. Maybe I’m not being real logical here. Oh well.
